Learn about our 12 Week Comprehensive Weight Loss Program

Balanced Well-Being Healthcare in Fort Collins, Colorado offers a medically prescribed nutritional weight loss program to help you achieve all of your weight loss goals. We have found that in order to succeed long term with weight loss maintenance, you need to have a plan that is sustainable and realistic.

We use body composition as an important way to measure progress. To obtain body composition readings we use a Bioimpedance Analysis (BIA) machine, which gives readings through electrodes attached to your body. The composition of your body–muscle, fluids, fat–helps us understand progress as well as giving us a starting place. We will do a body composition reading on you each time you come in for an appointment.

The BIA machine also gives us your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR), or the amount of calories you burn in a day if you do nothing. On the basis of the patient’s BMR, Balanced Well-Being Healthcare diet experts will recommend a diet plan to support weight loss. This diet is composed of high-quality, nutrient dense food and meal replacement shakes when indicated.

Your initial visit may include but is not limited to:

  • Medical history
  • Physical exam and blood work
  • Prescription for diet medications when indicated
  • One-on-one nutrition counseling
  • Exercise recommendations
  • Private weigh-ins
  • Body composition reading

Every person is different. To obtain a truly comprehensive understanding of your condition, a comprehensive evaluation is required. This process can be broken down roughly into 4 steps (this is dependent on each client’s specific condition or needs):

Step 1: Baseline Physical Assessment

Body Anthropometric Measurements

  • Height
  • Weight
  • Measurements—waist, hips, neck, etc

Visceral Fat Measurements

Abdominal fat (also known as visceral fat) is considered to be the most dangerous type of fat. It is typically deeper in the body and surrounds vital organs like the heart and liver, putting one at even greater risk of heart disease, insulin resistance and diabetes. It is considered to be a “red flag” for health risks. Visceral fat produces chemicals and hormones that can interfere with the way your organs function. Accurate measurement of visceral fat is not just for overweight or obese people: anyone can have visceral fat and the associated health risks if they’re not in excellent shape.

Overall Body Fat as a Percentage

Body fat percentage is a good gauge of an individual’s fitness level, as it is the only body measurement which directly calculates the particular individual’s body composition without regard to the individual’s height or weight. We use the Bioimpedance Analysis (BIA) machine to determine body fat percentage at each visit.

Dietary History, Habits, and Your Personal Activity Level

Your dietary habits, likes, dislikes, other treatments you have tried, medication or supplement history, and other important factors that contribute to your historical and current daily dietary intake will be assessed. These are important because in order to customize a weight loss plan for you, we have to understand the fundamentals of your habits! Your level of activity, for example, plays an important role in the volume of calories required to keep your body functioning in a healthy way.

Setting Plan Goals

In gathering these important personal metrics we can design a plan for you based on multiple factors and your specific health and weight goals. This will help to increase your energy, boost your metabolism and develop long-term life habits that will keep you healthy, in shape, and happy for years to come.

Step 2: Cardiovascular Health Assessment

Cardio-metabolic Profile Assessment

  • Total cholesterol level and extended lipoprotein profiles
  • LDL (aka “bad” cholesterol)
  • HDL (aka “good” cholesterol)
  • Triglyceride levels
  • Inflammatory markers
  • Fasting glucose level
  • Blood pressure measurements
  • Framingham risk score (This is a measurement for determining 10 year risk for developing heart disease. Factors measured include age, total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, systolic blood pressure, hypertension treatment, and smoking.)

Understanding your cardiovascular health is important because you could be at a high risk of heart attack without any symptoms and feeling fine, and then seemingly out of nowhere you have a heart attack. This happened to over 200,000 Americans last year alone.

Metabolic Profile Assessment

Thyroid screening is used to detect a condition of low thyroid hormone called hypothyroidism. Your thyroid function is deeply connected with your metabolism in that thyroid hormones play an important role in determining your bodies rate of calorie consumption. Patients exhibiting thyroid dysfunction tend to have a low metabolic rate. One of the most obvious symptoms of hypothyroidism is weight gain and difficulty losing extra weight. Often the “metabolic burn” continues to fall as calories are reduced when dieting. That’s why some women with low thyroid can have weight gain even when they severely restrict calories. In order to fix your metabolism, both the staff at Balanced Well-Being Healthcare and our patients have to understand your entire health and wellness picture, not just your incidental thyroid condition.

Sleep Apnea Screening

Sleep apnea is a condition in which during sleep, patients will literally stop breathing for periods of several seconds to minutes at a time. These apneic, or non-breathing, episodes cause lack of oxygen to the brain and have many ill effects including excessive daytime tiredness, even after a full night of sleep. Being overweight or obese puts you at risk of developing sleep apnea. It is important to determine your risk to this disease because, if left untreated, sleep apnea can result in a number of health problems including:

  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes
  • Obesity
  • Stroke
  • Irregular heartbeat, and heart attack
  • Depression

Step 3: Meal Planning

After a thorough consultation, our staff will evaluate your metabolism and cardio-metabolic status to develop a personalized nutritional plan. Areas that will be covered include:

  • Diet assessment
  • Healthy food choices
  • Meal planning
  • Portion control
  • Use of intermittent fasting

Your consultation will also provide you with guidance on:

  • How to feed picky eaters in your family
  • When to take vitamin and mineral supplements
  • How to read food and nutrition labels and what they mean
  • Whether or not you are getting the nutrients you need
  • How to eat healthy as a vegan or vegetarian
  • Tips for eating on the run
  • The best way to achieve and maintain a healthy weight
  • Special eating plans for medical conditions
  • What foods to eat to lower your risk of certain diseases
  • Other foods or supplements that can help your overall well-being
  • Meal recommendations based on metabolism measurements and personal goals

Weight loss is charted by our expert panel of doctors at Balanced Well-Being Healthcare.
