Why Do I Have Nutrient Deficiencies If I Am Eating a Clean Diet?
Many people today are under the impression that if they simply eat enough fruits and vegetables and supplement with vitamins, they have done all they can to stay healthy and should be able to sit back and reap the health benefits of a longer and healthier life. While eating fruits and vegetables is a great place to start, it might interest you to know that the old adage of “you are what you eat” is not, strictly speaking, accurate. Infections, yeast or parasites in your intestines can create inflammation which leads to poor nutrient absorption and therefore deficiency.
- Genetic factors also contribute to what your specific body can absorb. One in three French Canadian women are unable to absorb folic acid because of a genetic defect. That same defect was found to be present in one in seven women in Ireland.
- Over 90% of all Colorado residents suffer from some form of vitamin or mineral deficiency.
